I first saw the Watts Towers in 1963, a year after I moved to Los Angeles and have been a fan of them ever since. I realized they were a perfect subject for 3-D, but not until the advent of Hi Definition 3-D could they really be properly portrayed on video.
The Towers complex is an immense work of Folk Art, Sculpture, Archecture, & Engineering produced by a single individual - Simon Rodia - an illeterate Italian imigrant with no fromal training or education in any of these fields. He built them with no welding or machinery; he used only simple hand tools, an impression of which is seen in a panel above. He bagan in 1921 and worked at them for over 30 years.
Rodia collected broken tiles and bottles, shells, plates, cups, saucers, tea pots, colored rocks, etc to use as ornamentation. He pressed them into the concrete covering before it set.
